This course is designed to give participants an in depth understanding of the needs of social security and the means for its achievement. We will cover the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches towards social security, while keeping country-specific cultural, historic and economic circumstances in mind. At the start of the course, key terms will be defined in order to create a common understanding. Then the development of the German social security/social insurance will be covered and current challenges will be discussed with Experts from AOK. Each element of social security will be discussed regarding the relevance for our participants’ home country situation.

- What encompasses social security?
- What are the means and instruments for the achievement of social security?
- What are the indicators for social security?
- How is social security agreed upon in Germany and what are the specific means for implementation, how do they work and what do they achieve?
- What are the differences compared to other countries’ approaches including the home countries of our participants?
- Where are the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches towards social security?
- What are useful elements applicable in the participants’ home countries?
- Teaching and Assessment

This course will take place at the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health.
The course material will be covered in a mixture of lectures, seminars and group activities. Lectures will be held by both faculty of the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health and experts from AOK International Consulting. In addition, we are planning a visit to a relevant public health institution.
Assessment: In order to receive a certificate, participants take a short test at the end of the course and participate in a group activity.

Dr. Detlef Herbert Schmidt is a physician and has been working for more than 30 years in the German health care system and in international projects. He has been working for health insurance associations for 15 years, mainly in the area of disease management and development of care concepts, and since 2011 also as an independent consultant. Dr. Schmidt has gained extensive experience in development cooperation in the context of disaster relief in Asia, as a project manager in community-based medical projects in Central America, and as a member of a UN peacekeeping mission.

Its student population of 30,000 give Heidelberg a young vibe that is best experienced in the many restaurants, eateries and bars across town.
